Dalmeny Avenue – Bespoke Sedum Roof Shelter

Founded in 1964 as a central heating specialist, United Living has grown into one of the largest building developers in the United Kingdom.

With numerous projects across the country, our team was contracted to design, supply and fit a bespoke bike store for their residential development at Dalmeny Avenue in Islington.

First opened in 1913, the site was initially created to provide decent housing for single, low-waged, working women and we were delighted to play a role in a re-development that stays true to this heritage of providing affordable homes.

Our solution

With United Living focusing on delivering carbon reduction in its activities, our team worked alongside theirs to design and deliver an ecologically friendly solution for the site.

A bespoke design of our Premium Amazon Eco Two Tier Cycle Enclosure was created for this project, employing sustainably sourced FSC timber to underline the strong environmental credentials of the wider development.

It was important that we met the client’s needs as regards privacy within the store, opting for much reduced timber spacings in order give the appearance of a vertical tongue and groove arrangement, but at a reduced cost in order to assist with tight budget constraints.

The team also installed a full-length sedum roof onto the enclosure, underlying the biodiversity drive on the Dalmeny Avenue development.

Strict local planning regulations prohibited the use of a full concrete foundation for the structure, meaning close interfacing between our structural engineer and the site’s groundworks team, to provide a localised pad arrangement in lieu, covered by a smart block paved finish.

100 of our Gas Assisted Two-Tier Cycle Racks were used within the enclosure, enabling the team to maximise the space made available whilst providing the users with an assisted upper level for added safety and peace of mind in use.

Entry to the store was via the single leaf access gate installed to the front elevation, paired with fob operated access control for a heavy duty, yet simple to use to use locking solution.

The necessity for Secured by Design compliance on the structure called for numerous security upgrades, notably a welded mesh inlay to the full internal perimeter of the store, coupled with non-returnable timber fixings and ground anchors for the racks.

Alongside the cycle store, our team also delivered a selection of street furniture to the development, to promote a long-lasting and practical outdoor environment for residents to enjoy long into the future.
