Why Cheap Cycle Storage Costs More

Cycle storage is no longer a “nice-to-have”. For commercial developments, residential schemes and mixed-use projects, it’s now essential infrastructure. Yet when procurement teams compare cycle storage or bike rack costs at the specification stage, the cheapest quote often wins for the wrong reasons.

The problem? Cheap cycle storage rarely stays cheap for long.

Across the UK, developers and facility managers are dealing with the hidden consequences of poor-quality bike storage: corrosion, instability, security failures, compliance issues and costly replacements years before they should be necessary. What looked like a saving upfront quickly becomes an expense.

Not what you thought you signed up for.

That’s why the conversation around cheap bike storage needs to move beyond initial purchase price and towards long-term value cycle storage. As a trusted supplier of high-quality, BREEAM bike storage solutions, The Bike Storage Company works with developers, architects and asset managers across the UK to deliver cycle storage infrastructure that stands the test of time.

What Cheap Cycle Storage Actually Looks Like

Not all cycle storage is the same. At first glance, two bike shelters may appear similar. In reality, the specifications of them can be worlds apart.

Low-cost cycle storage is often manufactured using thin-gauge steel, low-grade fixings and minimal protective finishes. Weld points are exposed, galvanisation is inconsistent and structural rigidity is compromised to reduce manufacturing costs.

One of the biggest differences comes down to finish quality. Many low-cost products rely on painted steel or light surface coatings that begin to deteriorate quickly outdoors. By comparison, quality bike storage should be hot-dip galvanised to BS EN ISO 1461:2022, creating a far more durable protective layer against corrosion and weather exposure.

Then there’s installation. Poor anchoring and lightweight construction can lead to movement, instability and long-term maintenance problems, particularly in high-use environments like city offices or residential developments.

Security is another major issue. Cheap cycle storage often overlooks Secured by Design requirements or fails to support BREEAM-compliant locking principles properly. Weak locking points and poorly designed racks increase the risk of theft, liability claims and user dissatisfaction.

The Hidden Costs of Cheap Cycle Storage

The true cost of bike storage is not reflected in the invoice.

Poor quality products can result in ongoing operational headaches – signalling a bad investment. Rusting shelters, damaged racks and security concerns lead to accelerated replacement cycles, frequent maintenance and repair costs you hadn’t accounted for.

A lower upfront spend can quickly become the more expensive option over a 5-10 year period.

Then there’s the compliance risk. Failing to meet BREEAM requirements can impact sustainability credits.

All of this reflects badly on the wider development and reduces user confidence in the facilities provided.

Why Quality Bike Storage Delivers Better Value for Money

Good cycle storage should reduce long-term risk, not create it.

Investing in well-designed, durable bike shelters and bike racks means:

  • Lower maintenance and replacement costs
  • Better user experience and higher cycling uptake
  • Improved security and reduced theft risk
  • Easier compliance with BREEAM and planning requirements
  • Stronger visual appearance across the development lifecycle

In other words, it’s built with long-term performance in mind.

Our Approach? Built to Last

At The Bike Storage Company, we design and manufacture bike storage solutions that you can rely on.

Our products are British-made, fully hot-dip galvanised and backed by a 10-year structural warranty as standard. We provide BREEAM-supporting documentation, offer Sold Secure certified options and maintain full quality control throughout manufacturing.

Our focus is always the same: long-term value over short-term savings.

The Lowest Price Is Rarely the Lowest Cost

Think about the bigger picture. Cheap cycle storage can appear attractive during planning stages. But when products fail early, corrode prematurely or create compliance problems, the long-term financial impact quickly outweighs the initial savings.

The better investment is cycle storage designed to last.

If you’re reviewing bike storage costs for an upcoming project, speak to our expert team about compliant, durable solutions that deliver value over the full lifecycle of the development. Not just in the short term.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Does Cheap Cycle Storage Cost More in the Long Run?

Low-cost cycle storage products are typically manufactured using thin-gauge steel, low-grade fixings and minimal protective finishes. These fail faster under daily outdoor use, leading to corrosion, structural instability and security failures well before the end of a normal service life. Replacement cycles, ongoing maintenance costs and compliance failures — particularly around BREEAM and Secured by Design requirements — quickly outweigh the initial saving. High-quality cycle storage backed by a 10-year warranty and manufactured to BS EN ISO 1461:2022 hot-dip galvanising standards delivers a significantly lower total cost of ownership.

What Is the Difference Between Hot-Dip Galvanised and Painted Cycle Storage?

Hot-dip galvanising to BS EN ISO 1461:2022 creates a thick, metallurgically bonded zinc coating that provides durable protection against corrosion and weather exposure, typically lasting 25 years or more in outdoor environments. Painted or surface-coated steel, used in many lower-cost products, relies on a thin surface layer that begins to deteriorate quickly when scratched or chipped. For outdoor cycle storage in commercial and residential developments, hot-dip galvanising is the appropriate specification — all The Bike Storage Company products are manufactured to this standard as a baseline.

What Security Risks Come with Cheap Cycle Storage?

Low-cost cycle storage frequently lacks Secured by Design accreditation and Sold Secure certification, meaning it has not been independently tested against physical attack. Weak locking points, lightweight structural members and poorly designed rack geometry increase the risk of theft, which is a documented deterrent to cycling uptake. In developments where Secured by Design compliance is a planning condition, non-accredited products will not satisfy that condition and may require costly replacement.

How Long Should Commercial Cycle Storage Last?

Commercial cycle storage specified for external or high-use environments should achieve a minimum service life of 25 years when properly maintained, provided it is manufactured from hot-dip galvanised steel to BS EN ISO 1461:2022. The Bike Storage Company backs all its products with a 10-year structural warranty as standard. Products that begin to show corrosion, structural instability or security failures within 5 years are almost always the result of inadequate material specification or manufacturing quality.

What Should I Look for When Specifying Cycle Storage on a Budget?

Specifiers working within cost constraints should prioritise finish quality — hot-dip galvanising over paint — and structural integrity over cosmetic features. Seeking products with a manufacturer warranty of at least 10 years, BREEAM-compliant documentation, and Sold Secure or Secured by Design certification where security is a project requirement provides a defensible specification. The Bike Storage Company offers a range of products at varying price points, all manufactured in Britain to consistent quality standards.

I was skeptical to begin with (big project costing a lot of money) but all fears were allayed once I started to converse with James and the team. Along with the fact that it wasn't my project to begin with, I had picked it up from someone else who had left the school and had all the quotes.

I found the service offered by The Bike Storage Company professional, accommodating and delivered to timescale. The guys in the office were responsive to emails and actually answered questions regarding the installation and the engineers that came to put up the bike shelter actually took on board site specifics in terms of the student start and finish times and also cordoned off the works to ensure safety. Really great service offered and I'd be happy to come back and get any other projects done in the future which I think the school is planning to do. We've also seen a massive increase in student's that ride to school as well which is great!
