2 Ruskin Square – 500+ Space Internal Bike Store

Ruskin Square is an initiative aiming to revamp a section of land located between East Croydon railway station and the established town centre of Croydon in South London. This project is a part of the broader Croydon Vision 2020 rejuvenation plan.

Croydon, recognised as the primary office district in South London, underwent significant reconstruction in the 1960s. However, a considerable portion of the office buildings constructed during that period now appear outdated and the area appears run down.

Croydon is already one of the UK largest commercial hubs. The completion of Ruskin Square will take the area to a whole new level, with up to 1.25m sq ft of office space alongside up to 625 residential units, 100,000 sq ft of retail, cafés and restaurants and vibrant and attractive public spaces.

After the successful completion of Building 1 in 2016, the Bike Storage Company were contacted to consult on the bike storage solutions for building 2, due for completion in 2023.

The brief was to design an internal cycle store to house over 500 cycles, focusing particularly on space efficiency and security.

Our first solution was to utilise our Two-Tier cycle rack system for the space, allowing double the number of cycles in the same floor space. We proposed plans, manufactured and installed gas-assisted two-tier racks to house 434 bicycles, with easy grip handles and individual lower channels for ease of use.

To complement the two-tier racks, we installed 21 easy to access, galvanised steel Sheffield Stands, intended for the cyclists on a shorter stay at the premises.

To boost occupancy and make the most of the available floor space, we also installed a small bank of our popular Semi-Vertical Bike Racks.

Finally, to accommodate the users of the iconic Brompton or folding bike, we manufactured and installed a bank of 21 Folding Bike Lockers, which include space for helmets, accessories, and other belongings alongside the folded bike.

The project was a huge success and the 503-space internal bike store exceeded requirements from contractors and the client. The building is fully let to the Home Office and is undergoing internal fit out, with more than 5,000 civil servants are expected to move into the building in summer 2024.
