King’s Academy Binfield

Part of the King’s Group Academies Trust, King’s Academy in Binfield opened its doors to students in September 2018, seeking to provide an ‘all-through’ education from nursery through to A-Levels.

Focused on providing students with the skills, experience, and opportunities necessary to succeed post education, King’s Academy Binfield has a holistic approach to school-life that includes enabling ample cycle-to-school opportunities for pupils.

To facilitate the school’s high ambitions, our team was called upon to deliver a pair of bespoke cycle shelters, capable of housing up to 200 bicycles.

Our solution

After consulting with the client team, architect and contractor, it was decided that our team would adopt a bespoke cantilevered canopy design for the school, engineered to complement the new build and its beautiful surroundings.

A simple but effective racking solution in the Toastrack Cycle Rack was chosen, to ensure pupils of all ages could use the storage safely without the need for any lifting. A simple yet sturdy design and in galvanised in finish, the Toastrack is one of the most simple and popular ways to store bikes in a school environment.

The Bike Storage Company were tasked with delivering the project on a very tight deadline, working with ground-workers and fencing contractors in harmony to ensure the narrow completion window was met.

Interfacing with the ground-workers on a daily basis, the canopies’ baseplates are fully recessed below the block paved finish, eliminating the potential trip hazard associated with conventional surface mounted fixing and ensuring a cleaner aesthetic in the area.

The scheme was designed to and did achieve a BREEAM Very Good rating, requiring a number of different elements to an exacting standard. The Trust will benefit from our industry leading 10-year manufacturing defects warranty for peace of mind into the future.

A post-build visit from us to the site indicates the shelters have proven very popular amongst staff members and pupils alike, it has been a real pleasure for us to have played such a significant role in encouraging a new generation of students to discover the joys of cycling.
