Carlton House – Bespoke 358 Mesh Security Enclosure

Carlton House, Wandsworth 

A complex renovation project that saw disused office space converted into a high-end residential property; Carlton House delivers contemporary living in the London Borough of Wandsworth.

Wandsworth’s level of pedestrianisation makes it highly cycle-friendly, and thus the architects responsible for the Carlton House project opted to provide residents with heavy duty cycle storage solution that would actively encourage active travel around the area, whilst ensuring suitability in an area of relatively high crime rates.

With the nature of the plot providing a challenging location for a bike enclosure, our expertise were called upon to deliver a bespoke design for the property.

Our solution

The area of the carpark allocated for the enclosure sat on a significant slope, providing a strong challenge on this build.

To offset this issue, our team worked closely with the architects and main contractor to create an elevated steel grated flooring design that could provide a safe and level surface for users of the store.

This design delivered a functional two-step raised access floor for the enclosure that could maximise the available space for the project, despite the complexities of the allotted area.

Meeting the planning requirements of Carlton House development required the team to deliver 120 Two Tier Cycle Racks  housed within the external enclosure, accompanied by a further 80 within internal cycle stores.

These Two Tier Racks enabled us to deliver the high density bike storage necessary to minimise the footprint of the store, and thereby reduce the cost per cycle space of the build.

To ensure the safety of the residents’ bikes, the Carlton Cycle Enclosure was built from heavy-duty materials. An uprated horizontal and vertical support framework was designed by our in-house structural engineer, coupled with a robust roof purlin design to negate the requirement for any internal steelwork within the store. This was critical to ensure no bike spaces were lost within the allotted footprint.

The enclosure was clad on all sides with our anti-climb mesh panelling, a staple of many of our most secure stores. Due to the otherwise exposed uprights at raised floor level, bespoke steel angle flashings were used to smartly hide these away.

PIR LED lighting and an access control fob system were also installed on the enclosure, all of which helped to deliver Secured by Design sign-off for the structure.

A black powder coat finish in RAL 9005 was applied throughout the enclosure to match the property’s façade, with subtle amber gravel providing a modern contrast. The bike racks themselves remained galvanised finish, to ensure longevity against wear and tear.

With our 10-year manufacturing defects warranty offered on this and all of our bespoke structures, this one-off landmark enclosure will provide safe storage for the residents of Carlton House long into the future.
